Irish (in)Justice Minister Forces Closure of Domestic Violence Agency

The Department of Justice has said the decision by the National Domestic Violence Intervention Agency to close is unnecessary.

The agency is to today confirm that it is withdrawing its service because of what it calls a lack of commitment to ongoing funding from the Government.

But the Department of Justice, which has been funding the agency since 2003, has said it hoped further talks would take place.

This morning, a spokesperson for the Minister for Justice (pic'd above) said an offer was made yesterday to fund the agency's work, pending a decision on long-term funding.

It is understood that move was rejected and the agency has this morning called for a definitive decision on its future.

The National Domestic Violence Intervention Agency provides support services to victims of domestic violence and is involved in creating awareness of the problem of domestic violence.

At a press conference this afternoon, the agency will confirm it is unable to continue operating due to its uncertain financial future.

The closure of the agency will result in the loss of the staff and the end of support provided to victims of domestic violence.

More than 250,000 people are the victims of domestic violence every year.
