Team formed to probe suspended bishop

A three-member probe panel of bishops has been formed to investigate the allegations against suspended bishop John Thattumkal of Kochi.

Bishop Thattunkal who has been involved in a controversial adoption affair was suspended Oct. 23, subject to investigations.

The Vatican also appointed Verapoly Archbishop Daniel Acharuparmbil administrator of Kochi.

On Oct. 25, the archbishop appointed the three-member bishops committee comprising of Bishop Francis Kallarakkal of Kottapura, Bishop Sebastian Thekkethecheril of Vijayapuram and Bishop Vincent Samuel of Neyyatinkara.

The committee will probe into the matter of controversy and report ot the Archbishop, which he will forwarded to the Vatican’s Congregations for Bishops.

Reports say the Vatican’s Congregations for Bishops decided to suspend the bishop after examining the initial reports from Archbishop Acharuparmbil and Vatican Nuncio in India Archbishop Pedro Lopez Quintana.

The allegations against the bishop will be probed in detail by three bishops, all from the Latin Church.

The Archbishop has complete freedom to interfere in the enquiry and search for its details.
